Pre-Order Haze For Your Bonus Drug Paraphenalia

Drugs are bad? Don't tell Ubisoft! Not only will the taking of drugs form a cornerstone of upcoming shooter Haze's game design, but they're celebrating the fact with a pre-order offer on their official company store. Buy Haze for the PS3 now and you'll not only get the game shipped to you on day 1 of its release, you'll also get a nifty drug-filled syringe. Which is really a pen, but it looks to all the world like a drug-filled syringe. We recommend it as a classy, sophisticated addition to your office stationary arsenal.

New Space Theme Visualizer Will Wow PS3 Owners

Playstation’s new 2.1 firmware update was full of several upgrades – but none was more desirable and cooler than the brand new music visualizer. It isn’t often that we decide to just sit down and listen to our music on the PS3 and just stare at the screen. Usually the visualizers are bright and can annoy the heck out of us.

This new music visualizer has been given a space theme and will make you want to stare at it for hours. It lets you see the motion of music in a whole new way. Perhaps the days of the American public being obsessed with space travel are long gone, but that doesn’t mean the great black beyond isn’t beautiful and mysterious.

This new tool was created by Q-Games and PR manager Duncan Flett said it actually enjoyed an initial stint as the boot sequence for the PS3. It seems that the gorgeous texture data came from the NASA Blue Marble project. It’s time to blend music with the vastness of space.

Hottest Playstation Game Chicks of 2007

5. Nariko - Heavenly Sword (PS3)
Meet Nariko, a relative new-comer to the gaming world. Nariko takes center stage in SCE's recently released PS3 title, Heavenly Sword. She wields a mighty weapon called the "Heavenly Sword," which alters into one of three forms depending on the attack stance used by the player. According to the game's plot, this sizzling red-haired female warrior has only a few days to live and she embarks on one final act of redemption against a king and his invading army. It was said that the "Heavenly Sword" slowly drains the life force of its wielder (if he or she is a mortal). King Bohan, who's obsessed with the Sword, begins a merciless campaign against Nariko and her people, so he can snatch the weapon for himself. So, in addition to looking positively gorgeous, Nariko has a righteous streak and knows the meaning of the world "honor." At the risk of losing her own life, she uses the powerful weapon to take vengeance upon King Bohan and his army.

4. Kaileena (The Empress of Time)- Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (PSP)
The Empress of Time, is a mortal, though immensely powerful creature created by the Gods to protect the Timeline. She first appears in Warrior Within, and again in The Two Thrones, where she is the narrator. She carries a part of the Timeline within herself, in fact, and can utilise its powers much like the Prince can, to rewind and slow time. When the Old Man speaks to the Prince about the Island of Time on which the Empress resides, he is most vocal about the cunning and merciless Empress.

The Empress ends up as first Warrior Within's mid-point boss, and then the final boss, although in the real ending, the final confrontation with her is replaced by a fight with the Dahaka. The Empress afterwards ends up going home to Babylon with the Prince. This ending is taken to be canonical by the sequel Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

3. Princess Farah - Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (PSP)
When Ubisoft revived the good old Prince of Persia character with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a new hot icon was born - a nimble young lady, named Farah. This extremely attractive female specimen is the Maharajah's daughter and frequently aids the Prince in his death-defying journeys. Whenever he's stuck some place, Farah is usually there to provide a solution. Farah also managed to fit triumphantly into fourth place, regardless of the stiff competition (if you'll pardon the expression). She's one of the rare characters actually worthy to be among great names like Lara Croft. Thanks to the efforts of the animation team at Ubi and the help of people like John Mechner (the creator of the original PoP game), characters like Farah move and act convincingly. Many animators in the industry should follow this example.

2. Rachel - Ninja Gaiden Sigma (PS3)
Seductive and lethal, Rachel is a particularly fine sample of game babeness. Those who played Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Sigma should know what we mean. Rachel is a sexy huntress with blood that gives her abnormal strength and she's also able to sense the presence of so-called Fiends, which she frequently dispatches with her powerful demon-slaying warhammer, a very serious-looking whip and blades. In Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Rachel becomes a playable character and this time she looks better than ever. Well, after carefully "studying" the character, it would seem that she's more than qualified to position herself amongst the most attractive female game characters. Taking one close look at her would make a dead man dance with joy - chalk it up to the sexy outfits and amazing cleavage. Another great job by the gents and ladies at Tecmo.

1. Laura Croft (PS2)
When Eidos and Core Design made the first Tomb Raider title, they probably never expected Lara to evolve into such a massively worshipped game character. Mind you, it's obvious that the main inspiration for Lara's creation came from daring characters like Indiana Jones. Born on Feb.14th, 1968, in Wimbledon, London, Lara Croft is the daughter of Lord Richard Croft and Amelia Croft. She's the 11th Countess of the Croft Estates, which include three separate manor houses. Brought up in the snug world of aristocracy, wealth and privilege, Lara was able to get private tutoring. Later, she became a renowned archaeologist with an admirable taste for adventure. Wielding dual pistols is without a doubt her best asset (yeah, yeah, pistols, right - 2Lions), when she's out exploring ancient tombs and hunting for hidden treasures. We've all been with her, as she passed through many dangers. Whether she's shimming across cliff edges or kicking the living daylights out of some poor monster, Lara has always maintained her poise and gracefulness. To watch her climb, swing and jump through some of the most deadly locations on Earth, is never a dreary experience. Plus, she looks better with each game, and after Crystal Dynamics' TR: Legend and TR: Anniversary, we have high hopes for Lara's future adventures.

Sony offering free PlayStation 3 with HDTV purchase

We've seen Sony play this hand in other parts of our great big world, and now they are finally bringing it to the States. According to a promotion, if you get yourself approved for the Sony Visa, then promptly purchase a Sony HDTV at the Sony Rewards store (out of a pool of models from the BRAVIA and SXRD lines), the good folks at Sony will throw a free PlayStation 3 your way. Of course, there's a few hoops you have to jump through, the deal ends on December 31st, and obviously you'll need a half-decent credit score, but if the suits approve your transaction, this is a pretty solid deal. Hit the read link for all the info -- just make sure you read the fine print.

Teen Opens PlayStation 3 Box, Finds Phone Book Inside!

Apparently the Grinch hasn't just stolen Christmas; he's also stole one boy's PS3. According to a story by Fox11 news of Thousand Oaks, California, the parents of a lucky 13 year-old decided to buy their son a PS3 with some sweet games. That's the good news.

The bad news is when he opened his PS3 box, he found a phone book instead.

He took the incident in good nature and laughed about it, but his parents weren't very amused as they forked out over $500 for the machine and games at their local EB Games store. The parents will be going back to complain about the incident. Apparently, it seems that someone at the store did the switch and took home the PS3, then placed the phonebook in the box as a substitute.

PS3 Owners Won't be Going Home This Year

Earlier this year it was announced that PS3 owners would get a first hand experience of the new Home application before the end of the year. Sadly, that is no longer the case. Earlier today we got official confirmation from President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Jack Tretton that the beta has been delayed.

During an interview with Mercury News, Tretton states, "we're looking to do a beta in the first quarter of calendar 2008." Although the delay may not be that long, the actual release of Home may be longer than hoped. Tretton does mention that Sony is "not 100 percent sure on when the full-blown release will be in terms of an actual date."

LittleBigPlanet delayed till fall 2008

We never like it when a title is delayed. The anticipation is extended, plans are reworked, and a general feeling of sadness persists for at least a day. The sting is all the more real when the game is a highly touted, much looked forward to title like LittleBigPlanet. That's right folks; LittleBigPlanet has been delayed until Fall of 2008.

The information comes from the latest issue of EGM which had LittleBigPlanet under the Fall 2008 release window. This is nothing but bad news for PS3 owners since LittleBigPlanet is going to be such an amazing weapon to add to Sony's arsenal. The ability to create levels, games, and then share them over a network similar to YouTube just sounds fantastic.

There can be many theories for why LittleBigPlanet is delayed. One could say that the game just isn't done, and if that is the case, the delay is worth it. Playing a finished game later, then a broken game earlier is something everyone would prefer.

Also LittleBigPlanet's launch could be coinciding with Sony's Home. Being that LittleBigPlanet is very community based, Sony might be trying to tightly integrate it into their online environment so that fans and developers can see the full potential of Sony's "Second Life."

Either way, it is the holidays. Don't let this disappointing news dampen the holiday cheer. With so many good games already out, and the possibility we might get to play some new ones come Christmas day should keep us plenty busy, and full of smiles well into the new year.

PS3 firmware version 2.10 coming tomorrow

The European Playstation website lists a new firmware update that will be released tomorrow. Version 2.10 is mostly a visual media-based update, with none of the listed features having any impact on gameplay. In other words, you can stop holding your breath - there's no in-game XMB here. Instead, we the arrival of two highly anticipated features. Blu-Ray profile 1.1 and DivX support will heavily increase the PS3's standing as a media hub.

PS3 Firmware v2.10 features:
  • Voice changer

The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat.

Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.

  • You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.
  • DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played.
  • Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. **
There's a smattering of other little additions. There are also a couple of stipulations with regards to DivX - namely, that copyright protected files, v3.11 encoded videos and files larger than 2GB cannot be played.

Sony to Sell 11 Million PS3s By Fiscal Year End

It looks like all that was wrong with the PS3 was the price, because despite a very slow start, Sony has announced that their console will reach worldwide sales numbers of 11 million units by the end of this fiscal year (March 31st, 2008). That's big news for Sony and the gaming industry, as developers have a lot more incentive to make games for a platform that someone actually owns. And so the console war continues.

PS3 one ups Xbox 360 with its DivX support

The Xbox 360 may have beaten Sony to to the punch with regards to supporting the DivX format but it seems that the PS3 will have the last laugh on the matter. First of all, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 is DivX certified meaning it will get full DivX functionality. This even allows for developers to utilize the solid form of compression for various in-game cut scenes.

Quote:

Last month, DivX announced that the PS3 will soon support DivX, and, this month, Gizmodo met with the company, which shared some interesting details on the big move.

First of all, unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 is DivX certified. While Microsoft’s console can only playback some DivX files, the PS3 will get full DivX functionality. This includes the ability for game developers to use the very efficient compression format for in-game cut-scenes.

This means DivX video cut scenes will reduce stress on the machine, theoretically allowing for better load times, less power consumption, and less heat output.

Famitsu Review Gran Turismo 5 Prologue - 39/40

Famitsu - the Japanese Magazine that eclipses the rest, the one we’re all waiting to hear from. They have now reviewed Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the Playstation 3, and it wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that it eclipses all other racing games around it.

Famitsu scored Forza 2 36/40 and PGR4 33/40 - both extremely respectable scores. They have, however, scored GT5 Prologue 39/40 - that is 10, 10, 9 and 10, as we have been informed by a reliable source.

Those are some pretty glowing scores right there, for a game that is practically only a taster of the full Gran Turismo 5. I expect they’re holding back that fourth perfect score for the arrival of Polyphony Digital’s full flung beast.

An incredible looking game running at 1080p 60fps, with the best car models you have ever seen and with an updated physics model to make it the most realistic driving simulator ever. Polyphony Digital are gods.

*Update* We noted that we had not yet seen damage modeling in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue after quoting PSU’s mention of the feature being implemented. PSU.com has since taken a 180 degree turn and edited their mention of car damage being in GT5 Prologue:

"Still, many fans will be disappointed to learn that damage modeling has yet to be implemented, and it is currently unknown whether or not the final build will contain this element."

This cements that PSU has not played the final release of GT5 Prologue and are merely presuming its features.

The arrival of the London track is something else, which will see you passing through Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It looks incredible and is such a good addition to the series. Really we can’t wait.

Watch the VGA's Little Big Planet trailer

During last night's VGA live blog, this new trailer for Little Big Planet was released, demonstrating the advanced controls in the game. It does not do a good job at showing you the game play. So audiences without some previous knowledge of the game will be lost. What we do know is that the game is pretty complicated. Not much other explanation was given.

For people already familiar with the game, the new trailer is a confirmed magical treat. It shows you the current progress of the game and some idea of the extent to which LittleBigPlanet can be used to generate user content. So whether you are feeling a little like a pirate or not, the game seems to be pretty wide open to let your imagination run loose.

Sony's plan for in-game ads starts with Pain

Surely you've already heard of the PlayStation Network game Pain. Players know that the game features the ultimate in human slingshotting technology, but what you may know is that the billboards that your shot character whizzes by are capable of showing varied ads that can be changed at any time.

Adweek says that Sony wants to charge different rates to advertisers based on how many people are playing the game. In other words, more people playing logged into their PS3s Pain equals more money for Sony from advertisers.

Right now, all the embedded ads are either Sony-related or totally fake. That will change as advertisers buy into the program, and Sony expects to have 20 games that can handle this type of advertising by next year.
