Sony's game division finally turns a profit -- sells 4.9M PS3s in Q3

After bleeding red for months, Sony's games division finally turned a profit last quarter. Sony sold 4.9 million PS3s last quarter after slashing console prices, boosting game titles, and cutting production costs internally. Of course, we're sure Wii shortages aren't hurting Sony's bottom line either. Sony did lower its annual sales goal of PS3s from 11 million to 9.5 million (citing a slow start) while increasing PSP projections to 13 million from 10 million as originally expected. Sony's fiscal year ends in March. Overall, Sony's profits rose 25% for the quarter.

80GB PS3 dead, 120-160GB with Dual Shock 3 incoming?

Rumor has it that Sony is cutting the 80GB PS3 from the product line to make way for a higher end model. Sources say that Sony has already halted production of the 80GB and will remain on stores shelves until it runs out, which will then be replaced by a new model.

Sony delays Skype PSP and microphone launch, indefinitely

After making such a fuss, Sony Japan just delayed Skype on PSP services in Japan. A move with a definite knock-on effect for the rest of world. The cause of which seems to be Sony's two microphone products -- the single pack PSPJ-15010 and twin pack PSPJ-15011 -- which "did not meet the Skype specifications" and thus failed the certification process. Something you think Sony would have known well before the eve of the scheduled January 24th launch.

Rumor: PS4 to be backwardly compatible?

Sony isn’t ready to turn its back on backward compatibility just yet, according to a job ad put out by the company.

So Gamefront.de is reporting, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan is currently advertising for a software engineer to deal with backward compatibility for both the PS3 and an unspecified next-gen console – which sounds an awful lot like the PlayStation 4 to us.

Specifically, the engineer will be required to implement and optimize emulation software for PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games on both formats.

Not only would it suggest that PS4 development is now at the point where Sony can start thinking about specific software such as emulators, the fact the PS3 is mentioned as part of the job brief is also of note.

Although Sony has enjoyed considerably more PS3 success since it introduced the 40GB model last year (going so far as to drop all other versions of the PS3 in Europe and Japan), the fact it’s not backwardly compatible with the PS2 hasn’t gone down well with some gamers.

With many gamers still owning large numbers of PS2 games, reintroducing PS2 compatability would only help strengthen the PS3’s improving image.

Or on the other hand, it could all just be wishful thinking. Either way, we should find out soon enough.

Crysis being ported to PS3?

Even before the PC version released, rumours of a PS3 conversion of the stunning Crysis (developed by Far Cry creators Crytek) were rife, and not far off the mark if insiders at the studio are to be believed. The game looks to be a port of the PC original plus some extra modes and features, a kind of Crysis 1.5. Like the PC game you can expect a visual powerhouse; an open-world shooter that begins on a beautiful tropical island before things take a turn for the worse and aliens from a parallel world stake a claim on Earth. Only the mighty Killzone 2 could possibly hold a candle to this shooter. For technical reasons we hear an Xbox 360 version of Crysis isn’t in development. Bet you’re glad you bought a PS3 now, eh?

Sony cuts PlayStation 3 production cost in half

In a piece primarily focused on Blu-ray over at Business Week, a bit of scrolling led to quite the interesting tidbit: Sony has apparently been able to slash the production cost of its PlayStation 3 in half. More specifically, it was noted that the firm has been able to "shrink the PS3's chips and tweak its design," which aided in getting the cost per machine "to around $400 now, from Above $800 just before it went on sale in November 2006." According to Nikko Citigroup's Kota Ezawa, the biggest culprit for such an improvement is the "reduction in the parts count." Don't expect a price cut anytime soon though.

Mint Green PSP coming to Japan

Sony's been quite liberal with its color options for the PSP over in Japan so far, and it doesn't look like things are switching up much with the PSP-2000 "slim." This time Sony's busting out a rather appetizing "Mint Green" PSP to the expectant hordes that haven't already gone broke buying the endless iterations already answered by the company. Of course, there's no word or expectation of an US release anytime soon.

First Look at PSP-Skype

After previewing a working demo version of Skype on the PSP at Sony's booth, the audio quality was found to be decent -- certainly comparable to what we experience when using Skype either on a PC or on the receiving end of one. The only caveat is a bit of lag time in the audio transmission, less than a second but enough to be noticeable. The interface is super simple -- just select the Skype icon and you can see your buddy list of who's online; select someone to ring them up. At the demo station the headset in use was just a regular PSP headset jury-rigged up to the video out jack via the remote control cable -- not something we'll see in production. Since third-party manufacturers will be free to make their own PSP Skype headsets, there should sooner or later be some range of options available for headsets to use according to taste.

Nullriver to release MediaLink Mac / PS3 media sharing app this week

Details are fairly light on this one, but it looks like Mac users wanting to bring some Connect360-style media sharing to their PlayStation 3 and computer of choice will soon be able to get their fix, and from the same folks behind that well-worn app, no less. According to Nullriver, it'll be releasing its MediaLink application later this week, which it says has been "designed from the ground up for the PS3" and provides "true integration with the Mac." No word on a price, though we wouldn't expect it to be too out of line with the $20 the company currently charges for Connect360 (a free trial of which is also available).

Is this the PSP Skype microphone / interface?

Given that we just learned that Skype for PSP would actually be coming to fruition, it follows logic that a dedicated microphone would surface. This one, however, is quite curious -- we're seeing a device that appears to be the microphone created for the PSP's use with Skype on a respectable Japanese website, but weirdly enough, there's a "Copyright 2005" splash in the bottom left corner. Additionally, Famitsu has a couple of shots of the purported interface, and while all of this is perfectly murky right now.

Sony Bringing Blu-ray to PSP, Sort Of

Sony kicked off its CES conference today with some big news highlighting several planned BD-Live interactive features coming to Blu-ray in 2008. During an interactive demo on the show floor, Sony revealed a series of interactive features currently planned for the BD-Live networking capabilities.

The first feature previewed was one that would allow viewers to send ringtones to their personal mobile phones, including content from the movie itself. Viewers could extract lines of dialogue from the movie or other audio clips.

More excitingly revealed was that Sony is planning select Blu-ray titles that will include a version of the film encoded for the PSP, thus making the film portable. However, Sony didn't announce a planned release date or titles that will include this new feature.

CES: GPS peripheral coming soon to the US

The Consumer Electronics Show has been big for the PSP. Sony officially revealed plans for Skype on the PSP. Now, they've shown off GPS navigation for use with the PSP. The peripheral has been readily available in Japan for quite some time now, but this is the first official sign that the US will also receive the device.

The Sony CES website reveals that the peripheral will work with navigation software, provided on UMD. "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides. With an easy search feature feature and customizable settings, GPS on PSP is the easiest way to navigate new areas and new cities."

Sony boasts PlayStation holiday sales numbers

Without comparable numbers from the other two console manufacturers, you'll have to consider these numbers from Sony in a vacuum of sorts. Nevertheless, regardless of the console horse race, Sony's got plenty to be proud of: 1.2m PS3 consoles sold since Black Friday; 1.4m PSP systems (unsurprising to anyone who had difficulty tracking one down this holiday); and 1.3m PS2 systems. That's a total of 3.9m PlayStation consoles sold in less than two months and, with the recent Blu-ray news, we suspect PS3 sales may trend upwards.

While Microsoft touted their total Xbox 360 sales numbers last week, we'll have to wait another week and a half before we get specific NPD numbers for December. But sales like these, regardless of the relative strength of the competition, means at least one thing: there's 3.9m game consoles living in happy homes and that's good news for everyone.

DiNovo Mini has a hidden PS3 compatibility switch

The Logitech's DiNovo Mini has a hidden switch inside that allows you to select between PC and PS3 modes. We're not 100 percent on what it switches around -- it's Bluetooth either way, after all -- but we're assuming some of the function keys get remapped.

Street Fighter Alpha Headed To Sony PS3

The ESRB has apparently given a rating of “T” for Street Fighter Alpha on the PS3. I was unaware that SFA was headed to the PS3, but considering it has already been rated, expect to see it soon. I imagine that this will be something headed to the PlayStation store in the near future. Street Fighter Alpha was an interesting PS1 game that was a little different than previous games from the series. The characters were created in more of an “anime appearance” than in previous installments of the series.

Although SFA isn’t my favorite game of the long running series, it would certainly be worth playing again.

The game was originally released on the following systems:

Arcade
Game Boy Color
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
Sega Saturn
Windows
Capcom CPS Changer

Uncharted sequel confirmed by Naughty Dog

PlayStation 3 fans have rightly championed Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune in light of the disappointment felt by the lacklustre performance of certain high-profile exclusive titles that flunked somewhat on Sony’s powerhouse platform during 2007.

The ongoing faith of those fans is now being repaid by Sony and Drake’s Fortune developer Naughty Dog following news that a sequel to the action-packed PS3 adventure is already in production.

Naughty Dog, which initially promised a sequel late last year, has now revealed that Nate’s heroic adventures are set to continue. Specifically, company president Christophe Balestra has this week revealed in an interview with French gaming magazine Jeux-France that work on Uncharted 2 (working title) is well underway.

Naturally, details pertaining to the new game, its storyline, environments, and features have not yet been divulged, though it’s a safe bet to assume that ballsy Nate is all-but guaranteed to become embroiled in yet more frantic jumping, climbing, swinging, and shooting.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune followed Nate as he strived to secure a treasure discovered centuries ago by English privateer Sir Francis Drake. Developer Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter) has enjoyed impressive critical and consumer reaction to Uncharted, with the game existing as 2007’s joint highest performing exclusive title on the PlayStation 3 with an aggregate Metacritic score of 88% across 49 reviews.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune shares its lofty positioning with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Sony thinking about an online subscription game service?

This is just the faintest whiff of a rumor, but Sony Asia just put up a questionnaire in which it asks how interested PlayStation Store for PC customers would be in a "Monthly subscription plan (1 price for unlimited download)." That suggests that the company is at least thinking about a service that would let gamers play as many downloadable PS1 and PSP games as they want for a monthly fee -- although it's not at all clear if the service would be PSP-only or work on both the PSP and PS3, which would sweeten the deal considerably. Chalk this up as wishful thinking for now -- but those of you with PSN IDs may want to hit the read link and fill out the questionnaire.

Skype coming to Sony's PSP?

According to new PR for Sony's upcoming CES showing, Skype is apparently coming to the PSP. Details are scarce at the moment (i.e., nonexistent), but the company makes clear mention of a Skype client for the handheld game system on its CES 2008 promo site, which is pretty official.

A little easter egg has also been found in the PSP promo video which accompanies this new info. For literally one frame, Sony all but confirms Skype on the handheld with a nearly-subliminal image that reads "Make calls with Skype."
